Actors from rural areas in the Czech Republic and Estonia undertook joint research and training activity, sharing their experience and knowledge in rural renewal and the approaches to the use of historical resources / cultural heritage.

While LAG members and individual members of the rural community were looking for more information about their local roots and cultural origins, they were also interested to learn about sustainable practices when it comes to the exploitation of their cultural heritage. For many of them the project offered a first time opportunity to cooperate and work at international level towards such a common goal, sharing useful information about traditions, conservation practices and related legal provisions

The municipalities of the Czech regions of Rychnovsky, Kostelecky and Jarva County in Estonia overall aimed to learn from each other how to best make use of their historical, cultural and natural potential. The project's specific objective was to particularly focus on the lessons learned from the application of these approaches, i.e. how do the partnering municipalities nowadays exploit their cultural and natural heritage in a sustainable manner.

Implemented in four stages, the project comprised of learning, cognitive, creative & promotional phases. Throughout these stages inventories were established, studies conducted, workshops & excursions organised. Activities focused on the recovery and use of folk heritage, historical architecture and local monuments, as well as natural resources such as trees & plants of local significance. The results of the joint work and the specific lessons learned were presented in two permanent exhibitions.

Awareness raising and training activities involved about 200 young and senior volunteers. They obtained information about traditional arts and crafts including folk art, literature and architecture; traditional celebrations and feasts. A mapping exercise aimed at safeguarding these; results were displayed at permanent exhibitions in the participating municipalities. The programme maintained a specific focus on the transfer of good practices in the preservation of nature and rural landscape.

The participants of the transnational cooperation project reportedly have started to more appreciate the history of their own region. Having developed a stronger sense of identity, they now initiate new thematic projects (e.g. handicraft, photography). The project beneficiaries say through international teamwork they got to know a different culture, have developed greater tolerance & have also lost their fear to communicate in a foreign language.
