Hiking path Roman Bridge

Summary

In Tungelroy, the Netherlands, a local volunteer organisation constructed a replica Roman bridge after an archaeological find. The bridge is now an important part of two popular hiking routes in the area and the project won a national prize.

Background

Tungelroy is a small rural village in Limburg, the Netherlands. During the rerouting of a stream, the “Tungelroysebeek”, in the area the remains of a Roman bridge were found. A local volunteer organisation decided to make the rural citizens aware of this interesting discovery.

Objective

The project was undertaken by a volunteer organisation and aimed to raise awareness of a newly re-discovered Roman bridge amongst the rural population. The objective was to do this by constructing a replica bridge and restoring local hiking paths.

Main activities

Next to the place where the remains were found, a group of volunteers erected a replica of the Roman stream bridge. The design for the bridge was based on historical information, for this design the volunteers were supported by an archaeological consultant. As part of the project a historic hiking path was also restored.

Results & Benefits

The direct outcome of this project is a traditionally constructed replica of a Roman bridge, which is now part of a popular hiking route in the surroundings of Tungelroy. The broader result has been the creation of a durable element in the landscape based on archaeology. For this the project won an important national prize.

Lessons learnt

This project demonstrated that if a group of volunteers are committed to the preparation and implementation of this type of project they are capable of completing it to a high professional standard.
