Developing a Beach on the Zeewolde

Summary

The project created a new recreational area and tourism facilities, using local natural resources. A new beach targeting different groups of visitors was set up and supporting infrastructure organised, including a beach walk and a food pavillon.

Background

Zeewolde is situated directly on a large lake, the Wolderwijd, which forms a part of the Randmeren lakes. The Randmeren consist of a continuous complex of lakes over a length of 80 km. The municipality wanted to develop the Woldstrand, a city beach on the south side of Zeewolde, into a recreation area for its residents and visitors.

Objective

The main objective of the project was increasing the recreational tourist attractiveness of the region. For this purpose a strip of city beach of 1,700 metres has been revitalized and provided with tourist facilities.TThe plan included the construction of a number of beaches to attract various target groups.

Main activities

The activities focused on development of beaches for various target groups: a children's beach with playground equipment, a youth beach with a playground, and a surf beach. Moreover, further construction works concerned a promenade of approximately 1 km along the beach was built and a natural swimming pool in the shape of an atoll, parking space, and bathing huts with toilets and showers. A beach walk and a food pavillon were also developed.

Results & Benefits

Thanks the project a new recreation area for holiday-makers from Zeewolde and tourists from outside Flevoland was created. This on the one hand will increase the quality of life in the rural area and on the other hand stimulate employment in the recreation and tourism sector.

Lessons learnt

The plan was conceived, developed and implemented with the full support of the residents of the Zeevolde, thus ensuring a bottom-up and community-based approach to the project.
