'Four Seasons' Experiential Education for Disadvantaged Children
Organic farm providing creative, playful & experiential education programs, targeting at disadvantaged primary & secondary school childern, allowing them to experience nature, experiment with health food, rural crafts & raise awareness of fair trade.
Changes in the Belgian school curricula in 2010 require schools to introduce more cross-curricular education on various new topics in their curricula. This includes education on sustainable development. Local Action Group Papaver have recognised this as an opportunity to diversify their activities, develop new income streams and benefit their local community, actively contributing to emerging education programme challenges and needs.
The project aims to develop an inspiring educational program for disadvantaged primary & secondary school students, based around the 'rhythm' of the four seasons of the year, using practical, interactive methods. The wider objective is to contribute to awareness-raising & appreciation of the role of agriculture & particularly organic farming, in sustainable development & to promote collaboration with local & regional public social welfare centres
The Local Action Group, Papaver, (i) designed and developed the 'four seasons' education programme addressing such topics as healthy food, nature experience and education, crafts, fair trade and north-south education in a playful, creative way and experiential way; (ii) promoted the education programme to local and regional public social welfare centres and targeted schools; (iii) developed a network of organisations which would be able to regularly participate in the education programmes.
Results & Benefits
Disadvantaged target groups provided with opportunities to pro-actively participate in social and cultural experiences; development of new partnerships and networks of local social public welfare centres and services; development of new on-farm activities and income generating opportunities; awareness raising of a broad range of local stakeholders of sustainability issues.
'If children and young people are the adults of tomorrow, our task is to ensure that they are sufficiently resilient, to raise awareness and ensure that they take a critical approach to such topics as sustainability and environmental protection. In a rapidly evolving society, the youth constitute an important link for future generations and such education programmes can make a real contribution to their future outlooks and perspectives'.
