Modernising Fruit and Vegetable Quality Production Systems at SOKPOL-CONCENTRATES

EAFRD funds in the region of Lubelskie were used to modernise an agri-food business in Poland's fruit and vegetable sector. New cold storage facilities were constructed and new processing lines were introduced.

Agri-food businesses can modernise their facilities and production processes to help make production and processing of fruit and vegetables more cost effective. Modernisation can also help improve standards as well as facilitate added value and higher quality products. The SOKPOL-CONCENTRATES recognised the advantages which can be gained from these types of business development approaches for its operations of supplying the wholesale market with vegetables and fruits grown by local farms.

The project aimed to help offset the investment costs involved in modernising food processing facilities at SOKPOL-CONCENTRATES. The goal was to improve the company’s competitiveness through a combined EU, national and private sector investment package. This in turn would also strengthen the supply chain for local growers and so underscore the development potential of the rural economy.

Main activities

The modernisation activities were carried out during the winter of 2009 and involved construction of a new a cold storage warehouse, as well as purchase and installation of new equipment and high-tech production lines for food processing. The latter included an automated reception line for washing and peeling root vegetables as well as a new production line for packaging puree fruits and vegetables.

Results & Benefits

The project resulted in: improving the competitiveness of enterprises by increasing the range of products; increasing production capacity with the increase in storage space; increasing quality by adjusting storage conditions for produced concentrates; improving their sales and market share by increasing the scale of production and safe storage of processed fruit and vegetables; improving safety and hygiene conditions of the production and introducing the most advanced technological solutions.

Lessons learnt

An important outcome from the project is its knock-on benefits for regional farmers. The new facilities and business growth at SOKPOL-CONCENTRATES help to provide higher and relatively stable demand for fruit and vegetable products from local farms. In doing so it strengthens the supply chain between growers, processors, wholesalers and retailers.
