Construction of a Sewage Treatment Plant in the Municipality Mycielin and Sanitation in the Village Korzeniew
Summary
This project aims to improve the infrastucture related to the treatment of sewage in a Polish rural commune. By installing a new wastewater treatment plant, it became possible to improve environmental protection and to reduce waste management costs.
Background
Though the construction of waste water treatment facilities in the municipality of Mycielin and a public sewer in the village Korzeniew waste water is channelled to the sewage effluent treatment plant for polishing. The investment is expected to cater for around 2000 inhabitants of the municipality.
Objective
The main goal is to improve basic services related to the management of wastewater, which will contribute to the improvement of living conditions within the municipality. So far, municipal wastewater was disposed of with vehicle transportation to distant treatment plants situated outside the commune. At the same time this investment will contribute to safeguard the environment.
Main activities
The activities have been divided in two main steps: 1) Contruction of sewer facilities in the village Korzeniew; 2. Contruction of wastewater treatment plant in Mycielin, which ultimately will be connected to the sewage systems of nearby villages.
Results & Benefits
The first phase of the investment (connecting sewers to the plant) will address the needs of approximately 500 residents of the municipality Mycielin. However, once the second phase is completed it is expected that this will connect the other villages and serve over 2,000 inhabitants.
Lessons learnt
The projectstrikes a good balance between addressing public infrastucture on one hand whilst having a decisive beneficial impact on the environment at the same time. This resulted in reduced maintenance costs by the Municipal Office of Mycielin. Transport costs where also reduced as disposal to a distant plant was stopped. On a long term, this will result in the possibility of directing the savings for other needs of the local residents.
