Small-Scale Energy Production from Wood in La Réunion

Summary

This project focuses on the development of bioresources in the upper region of La Réunion. It evaluates the potential for developing an industry based on the production of energy from wood and aims to set up two trial wood gasification units.

Background

The first PER project (2008-2009) focused on the development of the bio-resources of the Upper Western region. It showed the benefits of producing energy from wood, including the diversification of farming activities and the use of local resources, as well as wider economic and social benefits. This project, led by the ARER, aims to establish the conditions for setting up a small-scale unit for the production of energy from wood in this part of the island.

Objective

The overall aim is to evaluate the conditions for the development of a new industry for producting energy from wood in four potential sites, identified in the PER, and located in the Upper region of the island. The operational objectives are the use of plots of land for the production of wood, and the setting up of two trial units for wood gasification. The project is also funded under measure 412 Environment / land management.

Main activities

The project is being carried out in 6 phases: 1) Initial studies (into wood resources, techno-economic feasibility); 2) supply of resources (investment in equipment, wood handling and land monitoring); 3) production of renewable energy (setup /construction of the plant); 4) heat development (techno-economic studies and global energy assessment); 5) recovery of by-products (uses for the ash and other waste); 6) development of small-scale industries (based on an analysis of local geography).

Results & Benefits

The project is still in the implementation phase, but with the following indicative results: i) number of wood gasification installations completed and operational; ii) number of jobs created by each trial site in the agricultural area; iii) land area used for the production of energy from wood at the end of the PER; iv) evaluation of the potential for expansion within the region, and the appropriate criteria of success.

Lessons learnt

Key determining factors for the success of the project are both technical and economic. This requires a detailed analysis of the feasibility of the use of wood in the areas identified, as well as research to identify the most effective technology.
