Creating a Line for Raising Local Breed Chickens in France

Summary

A successful combination of investments enabled a grain farm situated in a natural park to seize new business opportunities through producing and selling local products while preventing a local chicken breed from extinction.

Background

The project beneficiary is an established grain farm in the municipality of Prunay-sur-Essone, in the area of the Regional Natural Park of the French Gâtinais. Urged by the intention to develop new business opportunities through introducing local products in the market and at the same time address environmental concerns, the beneficiary started a project to create a line for raising "Gâtinais" chickens as well as to create processing and selling facilities within the farm. In order to realise the project the beneficiary applied for two different LEADER measures, namely measures 411 and 413.

Objective

The project objectives were to secure additional income for the farm and to restore poultry meat production in the territory of Regional Natural Park of the French Gâtinais. Another important objective of the project was the creation of new job opportunities in the area.

Main activities

The main activities undertaken for the implementation of the project were: i) the adaptation of 10 ha agricultural land for setting up a poultry line (drainage, separation for rotation, water troughs); ii) the construction of poultry farm building; iii) the creation of a small food-processing facility, slaughterhouse and room for packaging; and iv) a farm shop (financed by measure 413). Information panels were also installed on county roads to guide people to the farm.

Results & Benefits

The retail space was opened few days before Christmas 2010. This made the place very popular and since then many clients have visited the farm regularly. Revenues for the farmer increased and a part-time job was created. The project also allowed for local breed at risk of extinction to be preserved.

Lessons learnt

The utilisation of local production factors (like locally produced cereals) allows for better control of production costs and help improving farmer’s market position and income. In addition, focusing on local products/breeds enables to take advantage of niche markets.
