This project’s promoter identified the local needs of her community from her own personal experience and so established her own childcare centre business. The centre is now providing employment and supporting community development.

The idea to develop the Nissi Family Centre came from the needs of the project promoter to find a day-care centre for her own children. After researching such facilities it became clear that the area, in particular the two municipalities of Nissi and Kernu, did not provide many services for a family’s needs. This led the project promoter to make the decision that she would open her own day-care centre. This project therefore combines the development of a new business with meeting the needs of the local community.

The main objective of this LEADER supported project is to provide a new building for the family centre. Other objectives include getting the family centre up and running and capable of offering various types of support such as child day-care, training, advisory services, and other social activities for the inhabitants of the Nissi and Kernu municipalities. Thus, the centre will create new jobs for local people in the area and contribute to social inclusion.

The main activities of the project involve: i) the building of the centre with a playground area; ii) purchasing the necessary equipment for the running of the centre; iii) training the staff in order to ensure the centre can offer quality services; iv) establishing an Internet connection for the use of the users of the centre.

The project is still on-going but there are already some initial results. The main building and the playground area have been completed and 8 members of support staff have been trained. This means the centre should be fully operational by autumn 2012 thus creating new jobs for local people. Other expected results include; improving the childcare services on offer to the community, making the day-to-day lives of families easier, and the wider outcome of enhancing social cohesion in the area.

The most important lesson learnt during the initial stages of the project was that most things take more time than initially planned in relatively small-scale projects such as this. This was because finding financial support for the construction of a multi-functional building and the ensuing implementation of the project proved to be very complicated. Finding already existing rooms/houses to be renovated would have made things much easier but in a rural area this option is not always available.
