Agri-environmental Program to Preserve Two Endangered Breeds in the Carpathian Region

Summary

An experimental plant of the Institute of Zootechny used EAFRD support to implement an agri-environmental program for rearing two endangered breeds, namely the Hutsul horses and the Carpathian goats while protecting their natural habitat.

Video:

Background

The experimental plant manages a farm of about 1,500 ha and offers agro-tourism services. The farm uses about 770 ha of permanent grassland, including some 400 ha covered by the agri-environment scheme. Corn, wheat and oilseed rape are cultivated on 420 ha of arable land. The farm also specializes in breeding cattle, horses and goats, mainly focusing on Simental cows and Hereford and Hutsul horses.

Objective

The objective was to preserve two endangered breeds, the Hutsul horse and the Carpathian goat, while at the same time protecting the natural environment of the Carpathian farming landscape. Breeding these two races was also particularly important to protect the corncrake population.

Main activities

The beneficiary is implementing the three packages of the agri-environmental schemes: i) extensive permanent grassland; ii) protection of endangered bird species and habitats outside NATURA 2000; and iii) preservation of endangered animal genetic resources in agriculture. Implementing those schemes required stopping the use of pesticides and artificial fertilizers. The mowing of the grass is delayed and the animals are grazing the meadows and pastures.

Results & Benefits

The project helped preserve the breeding of traditional animal species, as well as protecting the natural meadow and pasture landscapes of the Carpathian Region. It has also contributed in protecting wolves, local bird species and allowing plants to regenerate naturally. The farm is actively used for academic research and the funds also helped strengthen its agro-tourism services.

Lessons learnt

The project was successful by building upon local resources and traditional farming practices.
