Education & Training: Professional Communities 2.0

Summary

EAFRD funding has helped an Italian research centre to create a training and advisory system that actively supports the development of professional skills, both for farmers and forestry managers and for trainers and advisors.

Background

A research centre in the Veneto region of Italy wished to promote knowledge sharing and to provide those involved in agricultural activities with continuous training and advisory services. This project continues a successful initiative implemented through INTERREG and it involves the organisation of classes and online courses and has supported the creation of six online communities where professional advisors and trainers can exchange information and knowledge.

Objective

The main objective of the project is to address the training needs of farmers and foresters and for trainers and farm advisors. The project also promotes: i) dialogue and knowledge sharing between professional trainers and advisors; and ii) the organisation of specific programmes for advisors providing services to young farmers.

Main activities

The main activities implemented by the projects are to: i) organise training courses (class-based and online) for farmers, foresters, trainers and advisors; ii) develop a web platform to support sharing of data, knowledge, documents and experiences among advisors and trainers; and iii) set up online communities of advisors to promote dialogue on topics of special interest, such as cross-compliance, bioenergy, marketing and communication and farm management (both conventional and organic).

Results & Benefits

The project is still on-going, but it has already registered good results: 19 different courses have been held and appreciated by a large number of participants. The project has also developed a network of trainers and advisors who exchange information on a regular basis. This network helps to better assess farmers and forestry managers’ needs for additional training. The practice has been transferred to other Italian regions and implemented under other RDPs.

Lessons learnt

The dynamism of e-communities has boosted active participation. Online courses help to overcome the constraints of daily work that can otherwise make it difficult for farmers, as well as for advisors and trainers, to participate in training. The research centre facilitates interaction between farmers and trainers and promotes dialogue between different professional organisations.
