This multi-provincial project strengthens rural entrepreneurship in bringing together different stakeholders for the conservation and maintenance of landscape biodiversity and the diversification of livestock farming.

The project responds to the need to counter the impoverishment of agriculture and the rural landscape by providing practical advice and guidance for caring for the landscape and nature. Grazing is a good practice as it contributes to the conservation of natural and cultural diversity and it diversifies livestock activities. The project also encourages local people to get involved in promoting biodiversity and to increase the level of aid for nature conservation.

The objective is to maintain and increase agricultural and landscape biodiversity and to diversify livestock farm activities in a changing agricultural economy. The aim is also to fully use aid for nature and landscape biodiversity and to direct it to areas promoting rural heritage.

The aim is to increase the use of grazing cattle in biodiversity management by showing how areas with grazing will improve through planning of treatment and organisation. The use of aid is strengthened through advisory services to farmers and by directing additional funding to landscaping. Rich rural heritage, landscape and environmental sites in need of restoration are improved by local farmers and associations. Farmers also receive advice when preparing their applications for aid.

Given the nature of the project, local entrepreneurship as a form of side-income is enhanced within nature and landscape restoration and conservation. Grazing maintains a diverse cultural landscape and it diversifies livestock farming. Grazing animals help maintain and enliven the open landscape and enhance biodiversity. Knowledge about original biotopes and biodiversity among all local stakeholders also increases.

Wide-ranging cooperation between different organisations and over provincial borders has proven a powerful approach. Projects like these strengthen cooperation between provinces, improve dissemination of knowledge from previous projects to different stakeholders and the public and improve the standardisation of practices.
