Lithuanian “Farm of the Year” Competition for 2010

Summary

EAFRD support in Lithuania was used to fund the Farm of the Year Competition of 2010. The Lithuanian Farm of the Year Competition is organised by the Lithuanian Farmers' Union.

Background

The competition of farm of the year has a long tradition among the Lithuanian farmers. Contestants have to be registered Lithuanian farmers operating in regions covered by the Union of Farmers. Evaluation criteria include agri-business economic factors, environmental contributions as well as skills demonstrated by the candidate farmers.

Objective

The objective of the project is to promote good agricultural practice among Lithuanian farmers in issues such as agri-business efficiency, environmental contributions, innovation and technological development.

Main activities

The funds were used to cover costs involved in assessing the applications from candidate farmers and selecting 129 contest winners.

Results & Benefits

The prizes were awarded to farms that can act as demonstration projects and encourage other framers to adopt similar good practice approaches. In this way the results help improve competitiveness, improve the countryside and promote quality of life in rural Lithuania.

Lessons learnt

Award schemes can be used to promote innovation, environmental stewardship and competiveness of EU agri-businesses. Winning entries can inspire other farmers to adopt similar approaches and prize ceremony events provide an opportunity to explain rural development activity to a wide audience, including the media.
