Supporting New Renewable Energy Businesses in Kalmar Kronoberg and Blekinge Counties

Summary

The project promoted new renewable energy initiatives by providing information to and coordinating a range of potential producers and purchasers.

Background

The idea came from the Farmers Union (LRF Southeast) who discovered a demand for competence and new knowledge among farmers about: investments in and the production and use of renewable energy. In particular bio energy, biogas, small scale hydro power and windmills. The need for coordination of these activities as well as for information dissemination was also recognised by the Farmers Union.

Objective

The objectives of the initiative were to: 1) Provide information and coordination to actions related to the production and use of renewable energy; 2) Positively influence municipalities to make investments in renewable energy and thereby create new business opportunities for farmers and rural entrepreneurs, delivering renewable energy; 3) Facilitate the creation of at least three new businesses.

Main activities

The project had three main fields of activity: energy efficiency, assistance to the development of new renewable energy initiatives, and energy planning in the municipalities. In each information and training seminars to a range of local stakeholders was provided. Other important activities included the building of partnerships between providers of biogas and buyers of energy.

Results & Benefits

The following results have been achieved: 1) Four new renewable energy businesses have been started. Interest in new companies targeted at bio- energy has been higher than expected; 2) 12 hydro-power project proposals being developed; 3) A positive side effect, is that the consultant expertise in the biogas field has been raised by the project and will be of great importance for the further development of biogas.

Lessons learnt

Many parties are interested in renewable energy but do not have the right business channels and skills required for this new business area. There is an ongoing need for market activities to promote bio-energy on a large scale and to bring providers and users of biogas energy together. Another lesson is that the approach for seminars on energy efficiency must be highly be practical in order to achieve the best results
