Production and Promotion of Local Organic Potatoes
Summary
Cooperation between a provider of rural services and producers of rural products in an Austrian region has led to the successful founding of an area branding initiative, showing the development potential of investments in value chain approaches.
Background
Globalisation trends exert increasing pressure on the producers of rural products and providers of rural services. Centralisation and consolidation within such supply chains remain ongoing issues for rural business, and these demands weigh particularly heavily on the EU's food and drink sector, where specialists and smaller businesses are required to be innovative in order to retain competitiveness.
Objective
The objective is to develop and promote the production of locally grown organic potatoes (of which there are some 50 varieties) as part of a wider initiative to strengthen cooperation between regional organic farms (18), restaurants (7) and hotels and other providers of tourist accommodation (2).
Main activities
Strengthening the cooperation between organic farmers, restaurants and hotels. Creating a new marketing strategies using internet sales techniques, farm gate sales and direct sales to major customers.
Results & Benefits
The project has opened up new regional and national markets and led to new marketing strategies such as internet sales, sales to major customers, farm-gate sales, new product development, and tourism and restaurant trades benefiting from this potato valorisation project. Business confidence has increased with increased supply to meet the new demand for the organic potato, farmers have been able to grow and sell a wider range of potatoes and have better facilities to store the harvests.
Lessons learnt
The project could be replicated successfully elsewhere if it is adapted to fit regional circumstances. Much is to be learnt from the boost in growth this project has brought about, local economic benefits and opportunities for rural businesses. The project has given increased confidence to the farmers and other partners involved in it and still provides scope for diverse future developments to stem from this project.
