Establishing a Sustainable Forest Development Plan
Summary
A LEADER-inspired project using RDP measure 341 to establish a regional development plan for sustainable forest management. The plan aims to improve the maintenance and use of forest resources and to develop economic uses for the harvested timber.
Background
Unlike the Maritime Pines found in most of the Landes region, the South Adour forests consists mainly of broadleaf, deciduous trees. Due to the widespread planting of maize, forests have become fragmented and little used. Poor or limited management has reduced the quality of the trees. Only half the timber produced is actually felled. However, there are economic uses for the wood, as well as possibilities for developing leisure and recreational activities, plus heritage and cultural interest.
Objective
A regional development plan was needed in order to develop more sustainable forest management by combining the fragmented areas of forest into more manageable units. Bringing the owners together in this way should enable the maintenance and use of the forest resources to be combined, and the harvested timber to be sold on a commercial scale.
Main activities
Finance for the first year was requested in order to take stock of the forest resources and to map the areas and properties concerned. This is the first important step in the development of a number of practical projects for implementation in the coming years. Project costs will include an experienced forestry technician to provide support to the forest owners.
Results & Benefits
The project is ongoing, so it is difficult to make an overall evaluation. As an indication of its potential, however, the project was initially intended to be run only at the level of the Local Action Group (LAG) of the Adour Landes Océanes region (as part of its Territorial Forest Charter), but has been extended to include the neighbouring LAG.
Lessons learnt
It will be interesting to compare the progress and results of this initiative with those conducted in other Member States and regions.
