Development of Natural Resources and Heritage of the South Perigord Region

Summary

The project aims to preserve and promote the region’s natural resources. Activities include creating a geographical record of lost or neglected natural or historical sites across the area with a view to developing leisure and recreational facilities.

Background

The South Perigord region faces the prospect of a substantial reduction in its agricultural land-use, resulting in the loss of countryside (small valleys, chestnut groves, dry lawns etc.) and a decline in bio-diversity. This study - which results from a Forestry Charter in the region - seeks to address the situation.

Objective

The aim is to fight the reduction in land usage, and to promote the preservation of a lifestyle that encourages biodiversity (flora & fauna), and which can help maintain traditional landscapes. The project aims to preserve and promote the region’s natural resources by developing hiking activities and themed walking tours and routes.

Main activities

Activities include creating a geographical record of lost or neglected natural or historical sites across the area - recording their features and cultural heritage with a view to developing leisure and recreational facilities. Data collected will help owners, users, managers, and local authorities to identify priorities and optimal solutions for each locality.

Results & Benefits

The project is ongoing, so it is not possible to make an overall evaluation.

Lessons learnt

The project is ongoing, so it is difficult to draw conclusions at this stage.
