Background

In 2007, the exceptionally violent windstorm Kyrill swept across Central Europe and caused serious damages. The Pardubice Region in Czech Republic was not spared and some 63 ha of forests were destroyed. The association of municipalities DSO Forests Policka decided to apply for some afforestation funds to restore 2 ha of forests particularly damaged in the areas of Metuje and Broumovsko. The association cooperated with forest companies and a network of experts, in order to ensure the reforestation was carried on using the appropriate species of trees.

Objective

The main scope of the project was the reforestation of the most damaged area using autochthonous species and to undertake the necessary actions in the rest of the area to ensure the forest’s regeneration.

Main activities

Based on a thorough inspection of the damaged area, it was decided to afforest 1.47 ha. Conifers (1.21 ha) and deciduous trees (0.26 ha) were selected. The material was purchased and planted. Special protection systems were created to protect the small trees from wild animals. The rest of the area was cleared of wood waste and tree branches to enable the natural regeneration of the forest.

Results & Benefits

By planting very diverse local species, a more resistant and biodiverse forest will generate in the future. The cleaning of the remaining area will ensure a faster regeneration of the forest. The project also facilitated contacts between public and private actors.

Lessons learnt

The measure 226 ‘Restoring forestry potential and introducing prevention action’ is essential for safeguarding forests in Czech Republic. Without it, small forests’ owners, hit by hurricane Kyrill, would not have been in a position to restore their damaged lands. In addition, the cooperation with experts was greatly valued to create more resistant and stable forest biotopes
