Background

During the last decade, the municipality of Paredes has given great importance to environmental issues, in particular to raising awareness amongst local youngsters of the importance of environmental protection. A variety of information and awareness-raising materials have been produced, such as leaflets, billboards, posters and CD-ROMs, but the need was also identified for a higher profile action specifically linked to the local environment.

Objective

The project aims to convert an old traditional building into a modern environmental education centre with the specific objectives of: 1) creating a public space for exhibitions, workshops and various cultural activities; 2) promoting environmental knowledge; 3) promoting cultural actions that add value to environment protection actions; 4) animating the local school and community, and; 5) providing environmental information services.

Main activities

Co-financing from EAFRD Measure 321 (Basic services for the economy and rural population) has supported the restoration and revitalisation of a unique and traditional building in the municipality into the 'Centro de Educação e Sensibilização Ambiental e Rural' (CESAR). The project funding has focused upon adaptation of the building to its new function with the creation of facilities for exhibition, reception of visitors, meetings etc.

Results & Benefits

The project has: a) increased the number of young people that are aware of and active regarding local environmental issues; b) contributed to improving the quality of the municipality's built environment; c) halted the degradation of the rural heritage of the municipality; d) increased the municipality’s visibility, and; e) increasing the local population’s awareness of the importance of their local heritage.

Lessons learnt

Environmental and cultural heritage issues are closely related and can inspire community action, including the engagement of young people.
