A Computer Classroom for Disabled and Unemployed Young People

Summary

A local community project in Latvia funded under LEADER that provides new training facilities for improving the computer skills of those rural young people who are most vulnerable in the job market (notably the disabled and long-term unemployed).

Background

There are a number of clearly defined target groups in rural Latvia who are seriously disadvantaged by their lack of access to modern computer equipment and basic training in its use. This makes them very vulnerable in the job market. Some of the most disadvantaged social risk groups are disabled young people and those who are already suffering from long-term unemployment since leaving school.

Objective

To assist people in social risk groups within the local community to acquire IT knowledge and skills and to build a base for other types of future training to increase their competitiveness in the job market and opportunities for self-employment.

Main activities

A computer classroom has been established by the local community Association “Tu vari” with the purchase of 10 desktop computers, 8 desks and a printer. This classroom is now available for the organisation of training classes.

Results & Benefits

The project has resulted in the creation of a computer class with good quality computer hardware and software that ensures the possibility of good quality training for the local community. people with disability, social risk groups and retired people. Since 2007, 250 people have been trained in computer skills, plus 36 with higher levels skills in accounting and web design skills. The local population's competitiveness in the job market and quality of life has been increased.

Lessons learnt

Creating an environment and opportunities for skill acquisition in the use of modern technologies is very important for disabled people, other social risk groups, young people, the unemployed, pre-retirement and retired people. As the projects unfolded, a new training programme (“From an acorn to an oak”) was completed and new software, colour laser printer and laminator were purchased to enhance the classroom (“Investment into the future”).
