Equestrian Naturalist Centre

Summary

This is an innovative rural tourism project that aims to offer horse riding facilities and training in an area where such centres do not exist. The riding centre will include other leisure facilities for horse riders and their families.

Background

The promoter is himself a horse rider and has been training horses for years together with active participation in competitions. He has decided to transform his “hobby” into a permanent job and offer the local area with an innovative sport and leisure alternative. There are currently no riding centres in Karditsa.

Objective

The project aims at the creation of a horse riding centre in order to contribute to tourism development in the area, in particular rural tourism.

Main activities

The investment includes: a) construction of facilities such as a riding arena, wooden stables, a storage house for animal feed, a wooden hut for saddles, a roofed leisure area, a playground, parking space and landscaping works; b) provision of equipment for the above installations, such as riding equipment, catering, leisure and playground equipment; c) promotional activities such as a website and publicity material (leaflet); d) purchase of seven horses and a trailer for horse transportation

Results & Benefits

The project will provide the area with an innovative sports and leisure centre, offering facilities for both riders and their families. The riding centre will have an integrated character making several options available, such as hiring a horse for riding, therapeutic riding, riding lessons, stabling of riding horses, training horses for riding and leisure services for customers. It is also envisaged that one full time employment post will be created.

Lessons learnt

Knowing your subject is fundamental for the success of innovative rural tourism interventions. It has been important that the beneficiary is a horse rider himself and is aware of the needs and requirements for setting up an equestrian centre of high quality.
