Capitalising on Woodlands Resources in the Lazio Region
Summary
This project set up a partnership between forest holdings, consortia, cooperatives and municipalities, using different RDP measures in the Umbria region to improve the economic output of local woodlands and support sustainable forestry management.
Background
In spite of a potential output of 7M€, chestnut forest holdings in the Lazio region are characterized by low and irregular profits. This project was set up with the idea in mind that if the wood industry actors collaborated, they could all benefit from a more stable, integrated supply chain and increased profits for wood products. Furthermre, this cooperation increased the production of bio-energy and support the multy functional use of forests.
Objective
The general objective of the project is to improve the local forestry supply-chain. Specific objectives are: i) promoting cooperation between different actors and innovation; ii) producing renewable energy from biomass; iii) improving the economic viability of forestry holding; iii) introducing sustainable practices and preserving biodiversity; iv) promoting a common scheme for process certification; v) rationalizing management costs.
Main activities
The main activities of the project were: setting up the partnership between the different actors in the area; developing a common scheme for process certification; purchase of new equipment, such as new silos, sawmills, chop saws, log sorters and trim saws; and organising training to raise awareness on forests value, the need to preserve biodiversity and to introduce sustainable forestry management practices.
Results & Benefits
A good level of integration between different actors of the supply chain is the main result of the project. Thanks to this project many forest holdings have diversified their forest production, starting in some cases also bio-energy production, and they have introduced more sustainable management practices, ensuring a better preservation of biodiversity and improving work safety. Contribution to climate change mitigation and increased competitiveness are expected results in the long term.
Lessons learnt
Cooperation between municipalities, foresters and the university was crucial to assess the needs for intervention. The network established among different actors along the supply chain helped to connect foresters with the market and allowed for commercialization. There is a need to accelerate administrative procedures for the selection and replacement of beneficiaries and make procedures more flexible.
