Penhas Douradas - Vitality and local gourmet food
Summary
Based on the opportunities inherent in rediscovering and fostering "local flavors", this project aimed to revitalise the unemployment-hit area Manteigas (Serra da Estrela) through the production of innovative gourmet foods from local raw materials.

Background
Due to the closure of factories many local inhabitants of Manteigas (Serra da Estrela) became unemployed. This project was born from the desire to support these people by creating new job opportunities. The region is also rich in natural resources (such as herbs and fruit), that can be utilised for food production.
Objective
The aim of the project was to bring to light some of the hidden treasures of this region, imparting to them new life and opportunities. The underlying principles were: to make use of the resources (raw materials and products) that exist and can be produced in this region, to create employment in this area where many factories have recently closed down, and to draw on the rich history and knowledge that has evolved
Main activities
The main activities concerned production and marketing of a diverse range of gourmet products, such as sweets, jams, jellies, cookies, candies, chutneys, pesto, etc... A strong focus was on using traditional raw materials in an unexpected and even provocative way, creating a distinct image and exclusive packaging. The innovative recipes were created with the help of a well-known Portuguese chef, based on traditional herbs, vegetables and fruits from Serra da Estrela.
Results & Benefits
The products are now being successfully sold all over the country. Selling them outside Serra da Estrela, particularly in the heart of the capital Lisbon, puts value on and promotes both the knowledge and practices of the region as a tourist destination. The project created four new jobs.
Lessons learnt
When building on traditional knowledge and practices, one can create something different and innovative.
