Norra Möre – a Biogas Plant in Småland

Summary

As farmers in Småland, north of Kalmar, felt that using manure only on fields was a limitation, they decided to use it also to produce biogas for vehicles. They joined forces and undertook a feasibility study and started this project.

Background

With support from the RDP, eighteen farmers joined forces to investigate the possibility of a large-scale biogas plant. They realised that it was better to invest in a common plant, with professional management and supervision, than to have their own installations at the farms. The Federation of Swedish Farmers, in particular LRF Sydost (south-eastern section) helped them to undertake the main steps to implement the project: firstly to apply for funding; and, secondly to complete the pre-study.

Objective

The specific objective of the project was to undertake a feasibility study to realise a biogas plant able to serve eighteen farms, whereas the overall objective was to use economy of scales created by the a large-scale facility.

Main activities

The main activity undertaken was a feasibility study, which brought about the effective realisation of the biogas plant. The feasibility study was undertaken and officially presented in January 2011 and by February 2011 the activities for the realisation of the plant started.

Results & Benefits

Further to the feasibility study and the biogas plant being realised, all farmers involved benefitted from learning about the application process and developed cooperation skills through this project. LRF Sydost assisted in the application for funding for the LAG Leader KalmarÖland and the Läckeby Water AB association, which had already participated in the first phase of the project, became a leading partner.

Lessons learnt

The realisation of this project gave the possibility to participants to start cooperating effectively and to share interesting experiences. It was an important starting point that stimulated the participants to cooperate in other sectors, such as land use. In addition, the participation in different meetings gave to people a sense of ownership of the final decision taken and they felt part of the work plan.
