'In den Bongerd' - Theraputic Holiday Houses for the Disabled
Summary
At a Dutch fruit company two holiday homes were constructed for the disabled and chronically ill. Through this it is possible for guests to enjoy the atmosphere of the surroundings with all the necessary facilities such as medical care available.
Background
The Stek family wanted their fruit company business to assist the disabled and the chronically ill. They wanted to make their farm accessible for this target group, as they believe that the environment created and being outside would have a positive influence and be an uplifting experience.
Objective
The project's aim was to construct holiday houses for the disabled and chronically ill and their families so they can enjoy a week of peace in the surroundings of a fruit orchard. The objective was also to ensure that during the time of the stay those taking the holiday can focus on things other than their problems in accessible facilities and be provided with necessary medical care facilities and staff.
Main activities
During the project two wheelchair accessible holiday homes were constructed with all the necessary care facilities for the visitors. A link was made through local cooperation to provide tailored medical care for guests.
Results & Benefits
This project has resulted in two holiday houses for the chronically ill and disabled, in which tailored medical care can be provided through cooperation with a local organisation. The orchard is reachable through paved paths so even if a guest is bedridden it is possible to go outside. Finally, as the recreation residence facilities of the company have grown it provides extra income to the fruit company.
Lessons learnt
This project has been an example where ‘project supporters’ are willing to support in terms of services and materials, but are less willing to support with a financial contribution. It is a very difficult to financially cover this type of project with only material investment.
