Promoting Local Food: “Taste delights” Food Experience Fair

Summary

The “Taste Delights” fair is the biggest annual Nordic event for small scale artisan food production and producers. It facilitates and encourages regions to promote their local and tourism value, focusing on local food production.

Background

An artisanal food producers event was organised at regional level, coordinated by the Farmers Union in Sweden. It proved to be such a success that now the concept has been replicated at national level.

Objective

The immediate objective is to promote small scale artisanal food production. The long term objective is to establish new business relations between rural artisan small scale food producers and a wider market in the capital of Sweden and to strengthen relations between producers and costumers including with other producers in other regions.

Main activities

Organisation of the fair “Taste Delights”, which is the biggest Nordic event for small scale artisan food production. The event is a physical exhibition of the award winning 'food producers road map' printed in 2006, that contains over 900 artisan food producers.

Results & Benefits

60 producers from the region Kalmar, Jönköping and Blekinge co-operated and participated in the fair in Stockholm in 2009. The fair had 100,000 visitors. The results are positive, and believed to be contributing to the establishment of new business relations between small scale rural food producers and a wider market and to improve relations between producers and costumers producers in general.

Lessons learnt

The main lesson is the importance of a careful preparation and 'competence development' of the producers throughout the year in connection with such an event. Producers must be prepared about how to best present themselves and their products and how to take care of the logistics and the packaging of products. Also important is agreement on a common profile and agenda among participants in order to make as big as possible an impact at the event.
