Sustainable Tourism Network Genuine Experiences in Lahemaa (SGEL)
Summary
Lahemaa National Park Visiting Centre in cooperation with the most active entrepreneurs created a cooperation network called “Genuine Experiences in Lahemaa”. The network with EAFRD funds developed common marketing tools to reach its target groups.
Background
The Lahemaa National Park Visiting Centre in cooperation with the most active entrepreneurs created an entrepreneurs’ cooperation network in winter-spring 2005, which is acting under the name Genuine Experiences in Lahemaa. The cooperation network is composed of unofficial volunteers. The aim of this cooperation is to provide visitors with first-rate and memorable adventures and services that represent regional natural and cultural heritage.
Objective
The project aimed to develop a sustainable common strategy and tourism network and embark on a long term networking with two LAGS in the area of Kymenlaakso in Finland.
Main activities
For the achievement of these objectives EAFRD funds were used for the creation of a common webpage for the members of the SGEL network in Lahemaa. A four-hour long training on marketing using the internet was delivered to the members of the network. The network participated with its own stand to the TOUREST 2010 FAIR held in February 2010. A seminar on local food and roundtable discussions for the project partners were organised. A logo to present the sustainable tourism network was developed.
Results & Benefits
The network has been set up as an NGO with 15 members in the territory of the Lahemaa National Park and the territory of the Estonia LAG Development Centre. It has common marketing tools thus reaching its target groups. The wider longer term benefits of the project include the increase in the quality of life by making the area more attractive to tourists, which protect the nature and the environment keeping the farms alive and maintaining the vitality of the countryside.
Lessons learnt
Cooperation and openness between the SGEL members are key factors for the success and sustainability of the network.
