Background

The Portuguese region where project has been implemented (Lisboa e Vale do Tejo) is dominated by horticultural production. Average holding size is very small and producers recognised the potential for cooperation.

Objective

The objectives of the project were: 1) To improve the performance of 4 specialized service and agricultural production companies through obtaining better economies of scale in the production process; 2) To adopt environmentally sustainable and innovative production technologies.

Main activities

The main activities of the project were: 1) Purchase and installation of irrigation and draining systems with the possibility of reutilising drainage and rain water and monitoring quality, a system for monitoring phytosanitary conditions for plant-protection products and biological control, and production and pre-packaging equipment; 2) Electrification and improvement of facilities to ensure the necessary production process quality requirements; 3) Adaptation of machinery yard.

Results & Benefits

The main project benefits were: 1) Improved economic sustainability of 4 small enterprises (through common accomodation, production management pooling plan and improved production technology); 2) Reduction in water consumption (through better calculation and monitoring of water demand); 3) Reduced nutrients leaching, by recycling nutritive solutions and monitoring of quality; 4) Reduced application of plant-protection products by using integrated protection techniques; 5) Increased marketing.

Lessons learnt

The project has demonstrated the practicality of small autonomous agricultural/horticultural companies sharing certain capital and production facilities through physical co-location.
