Background

Since the early 1970s, Sven-Erik Johansson, and more recently, his son Magnus, has been involved in developing pig production on his farm outside Västerås in Sweden. There are many milestones in Swedish animal husbandry and the farm has been involved with "free-range" sows, "planned breeding", "no to chemical additives" etc. Over the years, however, the business has created its own approach to good animal husbandry with dedicated farm workers and good quality feed for their pigs.

Objective

The farm wanted to develop its products and partnered with an Italian entrepreneur in Tuscany, Ricardo Subissati. The aim of the partnership was to develop Swedish cuisine in collaboration with Italian cuisine and to manufacture products in demand in Sweden with influences from other countries - with the specific objective to develop the production and marketing of loin, ham and cutlets in the form of processed and locally air-dried products.

Main activities

Project finance was invested in the development of processing and air-drying facilities for preparation of a range of farm-produced deli-style meats with an "Italian style". In collaboration with the Italian partner, a range of new products are being developed and sold under the brand name and protected trademark of "Nibble Farm Pork". The project will continue to introduce more high quality locally-produced meat products and to build the reputation and profile of the "Nibble Farm Pork" brand.

Results & Benefits

After the investments have been made in the new processing facilities, the turnover is forecasted to increase from 1.1 million to 1.5 million Euro, whilst the number of employees is planned to increase from 10 to 12.

Lessons learnt

Despite all of his success, profitability was constrained for this well-established pig farmer and the opportunity for support from the Swedish Rural Development Programme was a great boost for development of his family business.
