Background

S.O.S. Fagarasului Country Association was set up in 2005 by a group of locals to contribute to the development of tourism in the area. The fall of industry in Fagarasului Country led to a severe economic and social downfall of the villages at the base of the mountains, with most of the young people leaving to work abroad. The exceptional tourism potential of Fagarasului Mountain offered a genuine chance to revive the area, by valorising its traditions and crafts.

Objective

The main objective of the project was to "revitalise" the Fagaras Mountains, supporting and encouraging tourist activities. Furthermore, the project also aimed at protecting and promoting the rural heritage and local beauty of this area.

Main activities

Prior to the project, no support was provided for the tourists who would venture climbing the 10-15 km of extremely toilsome mountain roads and steep ascents. Thanks to the project, mountain retreats were constructed on the North-Eastern side of the Fagaras Mountains. Tourist direction signs to access the crest were also installed and connection routes were created. Moreover, in order to strengthen the promotion of the area, brochures and flyers have been produced and disseminated.

Results & Benefits

Eight mountain retreats have been created in the following locations: Comisul Peak, Berevoiescu Peak, Bratilei Corner, Urlea Lake, Amiaza Peak, Piciorul Batran, Langa Peak and on the route between Trasnita and Cataveicu peaks. Through informational materials (brochures, flyers) tourists as well as local population became more and more aware of the natural and historical heritage of the area.

Lessons learnt

Some volunteer teams supported the implementation of the project activities and are contributing to the maintenance of the retreats after their completion: the direct involvement of the local community in the execution and promotion of the project proved to be a successful factor to develop a sense of “ownership” and commitment.
