An example of collaboration between a research institute, a regional advisory organization and farmers to inform about and transfer innovative practices rapidly on crop management, harvesting and other seasonal wine production actions.

The Hungarian Farm Advisory System recognised the need to provide its local advisers with up-to-date technical information about viticulture and oenology in order to assists farmers with high quality advisory services. This triggered a closer cooperation between the advisory services provider and a specialised research institute.

The aim of the initiative was to improve the performance of viticulture holdings by forging collaborative partnerships between Badacsony Research Institute of Viticulture and Oenology, the Territorial Advisory Centre (TAC) in Trans-Danubian region and farmers who contract with the TAC for practical systems advice through measure 114.

The cooperation was initiated by the TAC and approved and supported by the National Advisory Centre (National Agricultural Advisory, Educational and Rural Development Institute) and the Ministry of Rural Development. Farmers take part in the cooperation by entering into contracts with the TAC, thanks to the support offered by measure 114 of the Hungarian rural development programme, and a two-way communication between them and the Institute takes place via the TAC advisors.

The benefits for all three partner groups are easily visible. The cooperation with the advisors made possible to transfer the Institute's research results into practice and receive feedback from farmers. The advisers benefit through having more evidence-based scientific information available to underpin dissemination of their advice to farmers. And the farmers benefit by having opportunities to apply innovative practices and improve the competitiveness and overall performance of their farms.

Until 2010 farmers were allowed to use the supported advisory service only 3 times during the RDP period (2007-2013), and farmers and advisors found the support procedure inefficient and not effective enough. Since the RDP review in 2011 farmers have been allowed to use the supported advisory service each year. Administration procedures for the support scheme have been simplified and further simplification is planned through the introduction of a single electronic application form.

Measure 114 Use of farm advisory services covers the whole territory of Hungary. The Consortium (TAC) is entitled to provide advisory service throughout Hungary, but they mostly have clients from Veszprém county.
