Energy and Climate Initiative for Wilstermarsch

Summary

In light of climate change, the rural community of Wilstermarsch has undertaken joint actions towards improving energy efficiency in the area, in particular by maintaining the attractiveness of housing through reducing energy costs of buildings.

Background

Many old buildings in the rural communities of Wilstermarsch are inadequately insulated, have outdated heating systems and therefore consume too much energy. This affects the climate negatively, engenders rising energy costs, and decreases the attractiveness of living in rural areas for people that need to also cover transportation costs. However, there are some solutions to counteract this situation that could be available with adequate investment and awareness-raising.

Objective

The main objective of the projects were: i) reduction of carbon emissions and thereby promoting climate protection; ii) raising private investment that could stimulate regional business; iii) maintaining attractiveness of rural residential areas by modernising old buildings.

Main activities

The project consisted of three main actions: i) creating a project partnership between local actors from different sectors to be involved in the promotion of the project online and in regional magazines; ii) setting up a 'Central Energy Competence Centre' which serves informing about the project and offers guidance to local population; iii) subsidising the investments with a help of the Public Office of Wilstermarsch.

Results & Benefits

The project has significantly contributed to improving cooperation between local actors towards solving the rural energy and climate problems. Apart from the private residences, public buildings were examined. There are approximately 20 buildings which will undergo energy optimisation.

Lessons learnt

This project has been been successful thanks to excellent cooperation between the local actors. In particular, it has benefited from financial sources channeled through the Public Office of Wilstermarsch.
