Epansion of a Fallow Deer Farm

Summary

Inspired by the historical heritage of the region, this project focused on enhancing a fallow deer farm run by a young farmer. The main interventions included the purchase of new animals and creation of new facilities for their breeding.

Background

The beneficiary has a holding with an area of 11 ha where he farms fallow deer, mainly for meat as in general happens in Poland as well as in the rest of Europe. These animals have small habitat needs, are in general immune to diseases and adjusted to live on natural meadows. These aspects were important for the realisation of the project, since the natural conditions in the region are difficult for other sorts of farming. The beneficiary was inspired in the realisation of the project by a historical tradition of breading fallow deer in the region.

Objective

The main objective of the project was the expansion of the fallow deer farm, enhancing farm facilities and improving genetic features of animals.

Main activities

The breeder bought 14 pregnant does and 1 buck. Additionally, a so-called catching pen was build, offering facility where indvidual animals can be caught into, as well as a fence around grazing fields (separated areas where fallow deer graze).

Results & Benefits

The new stock has greatly contributed to enhance the genetic diversity of the herd, thus strenghtening its resistance to diseases and improving the overall condition. This improvement has allowed for more efficient production and better quality. The newly-built facilities have resulted in a more efficient farming enterprise.

Lessons learnt

The adaptation of the farming practises to the general agronomic conditions is necessary for a farm to be efficient and sustainable. Likewise the investment proposed should be carefully planned to address the specific needs arising from both the area where farming is taking place but also the kind of farming itself.
