The main idea behind this project was to diversify the village economy and upgrade its accommodation offer. As a result a local cottage was modernised and adapted to the needs of tourists, and in particular sport professionals.

Economic degradation is a real threat in rural Portugal, hence it is important to find ways to create new value from existing resources. This community had spaces available, known as 'Quarteirao das Artes e Desportas', which could be capitalised on. They include 6 houses with accommodation facilities, which were already used for cultural and artistic events in the local community.

The principal objectives were focused on enhancing accomodation facilities in the region Montemor-o-Velho for both general and targeted visitors (the latter being trainers and students of sport at the High Performance Centre of Montemor-o-Velho). Additionaly, the project was intended to contribute to economic diversification in the region and its external promotion.

Activities were focused on arranging the cottage house for the needs of visitors, in particular construction of spaces for training and physical rehabilitation of athletes. Specialistic sport equipment was purchased, e.g. vessels, bicycles, canoes. A space was also created that allows for organising group activties, e.g. workshops. The visitors are individuals and groups training in athletics, and tourists in general.

A unique accomodation and a leisure offer has been developed that does not exist elswhere in the region. The new accomodation has already attracted numerous visitors. The project has also contributed to the creation of two new jobs. Moreover, it had an impact on other services in the region, e.g. the consumption of local products has increased.

The project was a well-targeted answer to the needs for diversification of the local economy through utilising the existing potential.
