Creation of a Plantation and Irrigation System for the Organic Production of Truffles on Mycosis Poplars
Summary
The professor turned farmer, Boris Yankov, has used the funds received from EAFRD to pilot the cultivation of truffles on mycorised poplar trees using new production methods and farm management.
Background
The microclimate of the province of Plovdiv encourages normal plantation growth of truffles. The lack of local competition for production of truffles, increased demand and limited availability have been instrumental for the conception of the project. Truffles can be found growing close to roots of poplar trees. Poplar tree plantations are in decline and their prices increasing. The use of poplar trees for the cultivation of truffles creates another market of highly sought raw material.
Objective
The objective is to make Bulgaria a major producer and exporter of truffles through the cultivation of truffles using new methods of production and farm management.
Main activities
The main activities include: a) purchase and planting of mycosis poplar trees; (b) supply and installation of the required irrigation system; (c) building of a fence to protect the crops from animals. The selection of species, varieties and hybrids has been based upon: market demand, the period of maturation of truffles, availability of labour, comprehensive use of the wood harvested from the poplar trees and mushroom production.
Results & Benefits
The plantation of poplar species, varieties and hybrids has been established, and this innovative organic production system has been launched. The plantation has provided one permanent job and seasonal employment opportunities for 2-3 persons. The good agricultural practices trialled in the plantation have developed understanding of: (a) high quality organic production; (b) optimal volume of production; (c) environmentally friendly practices and activities; and (d) market competitiveness.
Lessons learnt
Piloting new methods of production combined with sound farm management and investment is of great importance.
