An environmentally Friendly Farm in Raková
Summary
The project aimed at modernizing a farm through new modern agricultural equipment, the construction and reconstruction of animal production facilities, and green infrastructure investments.
Background
Farms that want to "compete" with the demanding market requirements and still conform to the current legislation have to provide a modern, efficient and environmentally friendly agricultural production. The farm UNI-CON KYSUCE is located in the village of Raková, which lies in the northeastern part of the Žilina region. The farm managed nearly 1,100 ha of land, of which a substantial portion is being farmed organically. UNI-CON KYSUCE mainly deals with livestock (sheep, poultry, cattle, pig) and crop production.
Objective
The project's objectives were: i) to respect the company’s registration conditions on organic agriculture; ii) to reduce forage’s production and storage costs, and increase its quality and nutritional value; iii) to improve animal welfare and farm buildings; iv) to improve the farm’s productivity and competitiveness in the market.
Main activities
The project’s main activities were: i) to purchase new sewage, electrical and handling equipment; ii) to rebuild the sinkhole; iii) to build additional rearing structures for cattle and a new sheepfold; iv) to fence off land and create a road network.
Results & Benefits
The expected results were: i) increased production capacity & environmental protection; ii) improved farm's technical and technological equipment; iii) improved quality of hay, haylage and silage during the winter feeding period for bred sheep, cattle and horses; iv) contributed to the improvement of sheep health and animal welfare; v) created suitable conditions for cattle breeding activities; vi) created a pleasant and environmentally friendly farm.
Lessons learnt
The bureaucracy was a major challenge for the correct implementation of the project and the reimbursement of expenditure based on payment requests a time consuming activity. At the end, the project helped to increase significantly the protection of the environment and reduce the risk of contamination.
