Innovative products derived from aromatic plants

Summary

The Javanase Farm is a positive example of how EAFRD measures can support the creation of an innovative idea - the production of the cream Beāte - by using existing resources, thanks to a good business plan.

Background

The income of the Janavas farm was dependent on the production of herbal teas from aromatic plants, but the owner wanted to introduce new products. He developed the concept for the cream Beāte and an eau de toilette. There was an old barn on the farm which could be transformed into a distillery.

Objective

The objective was to diversify the product range reived form aromatic plants (specifically launching the Beāte cream and eau de toilette) so as to enhance the farm business and increase income. Achieving this objective would contribute to the more general aspiration of creating new job opportunities.

Main activities

The main activities of the projects were: conversion of a building for manufacturing purposes and purchase of equipment for distilling aromatic plants, development and launch of the Beāte cream. To build a basic manufacturing facility it was required to erect and insulate the ceiling, build wooden floors and doors. In a second phase the beneficiary could purchase distillation equipment

Results & Benefits

The project helped to offer new job positions in the area and offered the opportunity to create a new business beside the farming activities. Moreover, thanks to the new business, the farm earns additional income from a new product and is also turning into a tourist attraction.

Lessons learnt

By being imaginative it is possible to develop a new idea and produce an innovative product by using existing material (aromatic plants, the old barn). This new idea became a profitable business thanks to a well-structured business plan.
