Improvement of the Hanze Corridor Through an Eco-Friendly Bycicle Track
Summary
This project focused on improving the attractiveness of a recreational area surrounding of the city of Dronten. New visitors facilities have been developed, namely a cycling route along an eco-friendly path.
Background
The city of Dronten is encircled by an attractive agricultural region along Drontermeer. Nonetheless, the area was lacking a good infrastructure connecting the city with its surroundings and suitable facilities and services to attract more visitors.
Objective
The project is focused at improving infrastructure facilities of the rural area along Drontenmeer. In addition to that, improvements in water quality, development of the landscape and awareness-raising on sustainability issues were overall purposes of the project.
Main activities
An 8 km-long bicycle track between Dronten and the Veluwemeer has been constructed. The cycle track runs along a strip of land between the new railway line and the Zwolse Tocht canal, cutting straight through the agricultural land, which was purchased. Natural and recreational facilities were developed along the strip. An eco-friendly canal bank along the Zwolse Tocht was also constructed.
Results & Benefits
The whole project was developed taking into account nature sights and preserving the eco-compatibility of the area. Additionally, the new route was integrated with the canal-bank. This in turn, allowed for the deployment of tourist facilities and services to make the area more attractive to visitors.
Lessons learnt
The project is a good example of resource-oriented regional development. Firstly the opportunity arose to simultaneously construct a cycle link together with the development of the railway line. Subsequently, this was extended with the idea to purchase the strip of land and develop it with nature. Finally, this development was followed by the addition of a nature-friendly canal bank.
