Energy Production from Agricultural Biomass

Summary

EAFRD funds in Emilia Romagna helped a farmer cultivate agricultural biomass processed by an experimental system into vegetable oils and “protein panels”. This system is powered in cogeneration thanks to the bio-fuel produced.

Background

With the help of the internet, the farmer discovered a way to build "Pantone" (particular reactor), which is used to co-power diesel engines, to reduce fuel consumption. This way the idea of developing renewable energy at farm level was strengthened.

Objective

The main project objectives have included: i) the production of green energy; ii) self-supply of energy for the farm and iii) farm diversification.

Main activities

The project helped construct a plant for the production of fuel oil from cultivated plant material (rapeseed, sunflower, soybean, Brassica Carinata (a typical crop), with environmental benefits (reduced use of fossil fuels and reduced CO2 emissions) and for the farm (sale and consumption of heat and power).

Results & Benefits

The plant produces biofuel with an average of 120 Kg seed per hour. The biofuel can be used also for consumption with savings of more than €4,000 per year for the farm and the production of green energy can be used for all businesses - cars, tractors, heating, - and be sold to the market with good expected profits.

Lessons learnt

Investment in green energy is a challenge. The system designed to generate energy using products grown on a particular farm can be transferred to other farms and be shared between several farms in the same rural area. The project showed innovative and environmentally friendly solutions to practical business needs.
