Substitution of Conventional Lighting System with Lighting through LEDs

Summary

Municipal lighting is a public service and its provision lies with the local entities. In the municipality of Benilloba conventional municipal lighting has been replaced with LED lighting.

Background

The illumination of public spaces in rural areas has until recently been lacking or inefficient in mountainous rural areas. Mountains act as natural shades but also obstruct the light in winter months. Illumination is a key factor for supporting and prolonging economic and social activity and has an impact on the psychology and well being of inhabitants in these areas.

Objective

To substitute standard light bulbs used for municipal lighting with latest technology LED lamps, fabricated in the Autonomous Community of Valencia. In this way, the project intends to improve the quality of life for the inhabitants of the municipality as well as achieve a demonstration effect that will promote a massive adoption of the LED technology throughout the Valencia regional territory.

Main activities

Substitution of standard light bulbs used for municipal lighting with latest technology LED lamps.

Results & Benefits

Illumination of the municipality with LED technology reduces the cost of energy consumption due to the efficiency of this new technology. LEDs produce more light per watt than incandescent bulbs, can light up very quickly and achieve full brightness in microseconds, while they have a relatively long useful life. As a result, public expenses are also reduced in the medium and long run. Municipalities experience energy savings as a result of the use of this new illumination technology.

Lessons learnt

Support from local actors is key to success: the project was supported by the Local Action Group (LAG) CEDER AITANA and has therefore received the backing of all actors that form the LAG.
