Expanding Farm Tourism

Summary

Farm Puhan expanded their non-agricultural activities. They built storage facilities, installed an elevator, equipped the kitchen with gas stove, installed water filter and glazed a terrace. Their tourist offer is based on a culinary heritage route.

Background

The Puhan farm comprises 11 ha of arable land, 2 hectares of vineyard and 1 ha of forest. Their rural tourism offer focuses on healthy and varied food and drink, mostly produced on the farm. They are members of the association ‘Diši po Prekmurju’ (Scent of Prekmurje) and part of food quality schemes Prekmurska šunka (ham) and Gibanica (layer cake).

Objective

The family wanted to increase income, reduce energy demand, improve accommodation facilities for guests and enhance labour efficiency and working conditions for the family. And as the farm is in quality schemes, the family also applied for funds (Measure 132) intended for producers participating in food quality schemes.

Main activities

The RDP investment provided for building of storage facilities, installation of an elevator for better access for guests and improved equipment in the kitchen including a gas stove and supporting utilities. The family also installed a water filter to improve water quality and partially glazed a terrace to enhance the appeal for tourism.

Results & Benefits

All the immediate goals were achieved. The farm’s income has increased, labour efficiency has improved, the energy demand has reduced, and the working and accommodation conditions have improved. It has also stimulated the performance of this short supply food chain. An additional spin-off is it has stimulated new ideas about future expansion, which might include setting up cooking courses and providing advice on healthy diets based on Prekmurje cuisine.

Lessons learnt

Jožef Puhan notes: “If no RDP funds were available we would advance only slowly. These were real financial injections for developing farm tourism, which has enabled us to sell what we produce on the farm and improve our overall financial situation.”
