County Kilkenny Graveyard Heritage

Summary

The project involves the identification of graveyards and graves in Kilkenny and to publicly connect them with the unique stories and storytelling traditions of Ireland.

Background

Historic graveyards constitute a unique nodal point in the Irish heritage. As the resting place for countless generations, they represent a continuous tradition stretching back over 1500 years. Every historic graveyard is associated with stories about the graveyard and even the people buried there.

Objective

Kilkenny LEADER Partnership conducted this project to capture the history of a selected number of gravesites and connect it with its own unique set of stories. The project will provide training for members of local community groups and will also generate a heritage management plan and a written tour for each graveyard.

Main activities

The project involved identifying a number of graveyards and graves in Kilkenny, recording the graveyards, acquiring individual stories for the sites and finally recording new media for embedding with those graveyards. The process was carried out using new forms of high-tech equipment and technology. Up-skilling and training were provided to members of the community, generating a heritage management plan and providing a documented tour of each graveyard.

Results & Benefits

The delivery of this programme demanded a combination of new academic learning and practical experience. Local communities were directly involved in the collection and management of the data which fostered and developed a personal appreciation for all facets of graveyard heritage as well as Irish traditions. This may already have been present, but the programme was designed to encourage new perspectives and allow participants to develop their own competencies to further research new interests.

Lessons learnt

The heritage of Kilkenny can be promoted by providing sustainable cultural infrastructure. Participants completed this project with a solid understanding of the conservation of a historic graveyard. They demonstrated the ability to actively participate in the framing, writing and production of a historic graveyard management plan. The team learned skills in practical geotagging and memorial recording as they identified the key stories relating
