‘Countryside Live’ is a new and innovative event organised by the Royal Northern Agricultural Society. In 2011 it showcased and promoted all aspects of estate and farm management over two days and through a wide range of displays and demonstrations.

Traditionally rural Aberdeenshire has been economically dependent on agriculture, forestry and fishing. More recently a range of local organisations have placed an emphasis on the development of new opportunities, which aim to create vibrant and inclusive rural communities as well as maintain and promote economically viable rural businesses and services.

Through a local event the project aims to showcase farming, food production, land management, and rural crafts and skills to the general public by providing an enjoyable and educational day out which is suitable for all age groups.

This Leader supported event was held at Dunecht Estate on Sunday 12th June 2011 as part of the Open Farm Sunday programme, which involves events throughout the UK. The next day was an open day for primary school children, many from socially deprived areas, providing them chance to learn about the countryside. The event encompassed a wide range of attractions including a farmers market, cropping, livestock, forestry, sporting and recreational areas, and conservation and land management displays

The event proved highly popular with the first day attracting 4,000 attendees. Visitors learned about what farmers do to produce quality, farm assured food and the actions they take to protect the environment and maintain an attractive and thriving countryside. Volunteering was also promoted and over 100 volunteers acted as stewards ensuring the smooth operation of the day. The event successfully raised general awareness of and “showcased” local agriculture through involving local people.

It is very important for the rural sector to foster a closer relationship with the urban population and to develop an understanding of farming and the countryside amongst them. This is especially true with regard to the younger generation, who are becoming increasingly detached and disinterested with their rural roots with each passing generation.
