Online Regional Tourism Portal

Summary

This project established an online tourism information system to provide visitors with information for the area. Seven web portals were set up for seven communities. The region's touristic and economic attractiveness was subsequently increased.

Background

There is currently no online tourism information system available in the region that could uniformly and comprehensively provide users with information on available services and attractions offered locally. Since one of the main priorities of the 36 Jó Palóc Local Action Group (consisting of thirty-six settlements) is to raise awareness on local cultural and natural values and to promote attractiveness of the countryside, it was important to make information on the region available on-line.

Objective

The main objective of the project was to provide guests coming to the region with access to complete tourism information and services (such as various tourist attractions and events etc.) and to enhance the position of the local tourism businesses by providing them with a unified communications site. The project aimed to establish a web-portal that can be accessed from seven web kiosks, set up in seven villages.

Main activities

A standard, unified tourism web-portal was developed which is the basis for the information system interface. The portal has seven access points (web kiosks) that were set up in seven communities of the region. For the running of software on the terminal, principal emphasis was given to making it easy to use and a simple, well-structured surface.

Results & Benefits

This project established a regional tourism portal providing an easy-to-navigate introduction to tourism in the region and a source of information about the region’s tourism businesses. The project will exploit the internet's potential to facilitate cooperative and collaborative business strategies through the portal which greatly enhances the region's touristic and economic attractiveness.

Lessons learnt

The support received from the municipalities in the area was much greater than was initially expected. The cooperation agreements, in which the partners commit themselves to implement the planned actions, were produced and signed within a short timeframe. The process of tender writing also provided several challenges.

Project location and other information

The project is located in the territory of the 36 Jó Palóc LAG, in North Hungary.
