Cultural Tourism “Opera on Öland”

Summary

Creation of an annual opera festival, using the potential of Öland as a summer residence for artists; singers, musicians, producers in the unique setting of the ruined castle on the edge of the World Heritage site “Allvaret”.

Background

The idea came from a private individual who made the first contacts with an Opera Theatre in Stockholm. A non-profit organization called “The Association for Developing Culture Tourism in Öland” was formed and worked throughout the year planning and organising the initial event in 2009.

Objective

The purpose of the project is to create an annual opera festival, using the potential of Öland (and its ruined castle site at "Allvaret") as a summer residence for artists; singers, musicians, and producers. The vision is to have a whole week of culture in the future, involving not only Opera but also art, theatre and dance. The culture week will act as a stimulous to develop new cultural tourism products.

Main activities

All preparatory actions in creating and then delivering the first opera festival in 2009. Building on the experience, it is planned to hold and enlarge the event annually from 2010 on.

Results & Benefits

The main purpose of the first year's operation was to find out if there was a sound base to work further on the idea of developing a culture week. All the stakeholders within public, private and voluntary sectors agreed on the fact that Opera festival was a success and that it was worthwhile to carry on and support further development of the idea of an annual Culture Festival. Benefits are both cultural and economic (accomodation, restaurant businesses, opportunities for local food producers)

Lessons learnt

The main lesson to pass on is that development of new business activities within cultural tourism and the creative fields cannot be managed and pre-determined/scheduled in the same way as for the creation of businesses within other fields. New Issues and opportunities emerge and need to be dealt with on a continuous basis.
