Biogas Plant 600 with Fermented Substratum Storage Tank

Summary

This on-farm biomass project uses local corn production to generate electricity. It contributes towards meeting national obligations in the field of biofuels.

Background

In the local area agricultural land is used for corn production. Agricultural diversification has been recognised as important and the corn crop, especially its waste material, can be a basic source of fuel for biogas. The production of the biogass is based on burning process of a biomass - in this case mainly corn silage.

Objective

The main goal of the project was diversification into non-agricultural activities by setting up complementary non-agricultural production - utilising renewable energy sources. The specific objective of the project was to produce heat and electric energy from biogas. Produced electric energy is consumed during the operation of the biogas plant and the surplus is to be delivered to the public network.

Main activities

The project activity was building a 'Biogas Plant 600'. Manufactured biogas to be used in the cogeneration unit for production of electric energy and heat. Works included: stockyard, machine room, gas-bag, anaerobic reactor, silage canal, transformer station, cogeneration unit, gas boiler, dryer and reservoir - fermented substratum storage tank. After the building works landscaping was done to ensure that plant fits the surrounding environment without any disturbance.

Results & Benefits

The main results are: 1) Development of economicaly viable and environmentally sustainable agricultural activities in the region and contribution to employment; 2) Production of electric energy (consumed during the operation of the biogas plant and) delivered to the public network; 3) As a by-product of the biogas plant - fermented substratum. A rich organic fertilizer - highly desirable to achieve optimal soil structure and soil fertility.

Lessons learnt

Key to a successful project outcome were: precise project planning and development, sufficient amount of quality input materials, use of reliable and verified technology, and accurate technological knowledge. The use of fermented substratum as a quality soil fertilizer was an additional benefit.
