This inter-territorial cooperation project enabled two LAGs within the Czech Republic to take advantage of their industrial past to improve touristic potential of the region and strengthen local identity and community cohesion.

The Moravian-Silesian region has many industrial and technological buildings, a lot of which are in bad state of preservation. These buildings have been abandoned for economic and other reasons and they usually arouse negative feelings. Nevertheless, they are part of the historical heritage of the region and country. For this reason the two LAGs, Opvasko and Nízký Jeseník, decided to implement an inter-territorial cooperation project with the aim to raise awareness of the importance of this historical heritage and use it to develop tourist activities.

General objectives of this LEADER supported initiative were to promote the historical heritage of the area and raise awareness about the importance of industrial and technical buildings. Specific objectives were to: 1) restore old industrial & technical buildings; 2) help local administrations and private owners in maintaining the sites after restoration; 3) promote tourism around the sites; 4) develop local infrastructures to support tourism; 5) organise education programmes regarding the sites

The main activities of the projects were: i) the mapping of the historical sites, which were classified into five thematic groups according to the buildings original use; ii) creating a website with historical information about the sites as well as useful services for tourists, such an interactive map and a free application for mobile phones and tablets in 4 languages; iii) organising workshops and other promotional events as well as educational activities for schools regarding the sites.

The project has contributed to raising awareness and increasing knowledge among the local population and visitors about the history of the regions and the entire country. In general terms it has contributed to the creation of a specific identity – and people starting to feel some pride in the history of their regions. In particular, the tours organised to visit the sites were very successful in terms of participation.

The implementation of the projects necessitated cooperation at local level between public and private organisations. This was achieved and is an important process as such cooperation needs to continue to be strengthened.
