Cooperation between Auvergne and Catalunya rural networks 2012-2013
Summary
The Catalunya and Auvergne regional rural networks helped rural actors gain confidence in their practice of English. In this way, they wish to promote the emergence of new LEADER transnational cooperation projects in their regions.
Background
When providing technical support to 12 LAGs, the Auvergne rural network realised that European cooperation projects were impaired by language barriers. So it decided to create an English training in 2 stages, one in Spain and the second one in France. The training first focused on local development and LEADER cooperation, then it involved a European partner facing the same chalenges; and finally it created the better conditions for the LAGs to establish new contacts for future partnerships.
Objective
The project's core common objectives were to: i) encourage and motivate LAG stakeholders to participate in English language training; ii) acquire and use specific vocabulary about cooperation and rural development; iii) promote the emergence of cooperation projects; iv) benefit from existing cooperation experiences in the Catalan and Auvergne territories; and v) exchange experiences, ideas and knowhow concerning common rural development interest, such as local food supply chains, agro-tourism.
Main activities
The main activity of the project was the organisation of two 3 days events that took place in Catalunya and Auvergne, respectively from 16 to 18 January 2012 and from 23 to 25 January 2013. Participants practiced their English in mixed groups of French and Spanish people. They practiced their rural development vocabulary (local products, tourism, environment etc.) in the classroom and during field trips. These field trips also helped share experiences between transnational cooperation partners.
Results & Benefits
During the trip to Catalunya, more than 75% of participants improved their English and more than 41% said that this trip allowed them to better understand their transnational cooperation project, or to create a new one. Three participants (with 2 LAGs) are considering leading cooperation projects in the future. The trip to Catalunya also led to new synergies between rural stakeholders in Auvergne. The evaluation of the trip to Auvergne is still on-going.
Lessons learnt
The main difficulty to achieve a successful project and exchanges in the long-term was to find a partner that shared the expectations of the Auvergne network. This innovative European project contributed to enhance exchanges between both countries.
Project location and other information
The partners involved on this TNC project were the Regional Rural Network of the Catalunya region in Spain and the Regional Rural Network of the Auvergne region in France. The activities took place in Catalunya in 2012 and in the Auvergne region in 2013.
