Background

Mäsovýroba Peter Jendrášek started its activity in 1996 as a small family business. The need to meet the customers’ growing demand and to modernise the original production facilities brought Mr Jendrášek to apply for RDP funding in order to build up a new production plant and improve the quality of the meat products. The company moved in the newly built plant in Trstená in December 2009 and succeeded in successfully developing the business. It currently operates in the Orava region and supplies many retail chains in the Liptov and Žilina districts.

Objective

The main project objective was to increase the company’s competitiveness and the quality of the meat products through the construction of a new production plant and the introduction of modern technologies.

Main activities

The main project activities were: i) the construction of a new processing plant; ii) the introduction of new technology and purchase of equipment to modernise processing and consequently the quality of the products; iii) the purchase of new vehicles for distribution of products.

Results & Benefits

The company moved into the newly built plant in Trstená in December 2009. Increased competitiveness of the company was achieved through increased labour productivity; a wider array of meat products; reduced production costs and the modernisation of the company’s transport. Furthermore, the project resulted in improved working conditions for the employees, the creation of new jobs and the production process of the company being adapted to EU requirements.

Lessons learnt

Planning the project, which included Mr Jendrášek choosing new equipment and visiting meat plants in Germany and Austria to learn from their experience, took a long period of time. However, this process was imperative to the success of the project. Peter also noted the importance of EAFRD assistance: "Starting such a major project in demanding industries such as food, without a financial contribution from the EU funds would be suicide. We made the right decision and we are proud of the results".
