NRN INFORMATION

The Maltese National Rural Network

The Maltese National Rural Network (NRN) was officially set up in July 2009.

The Managing Authority (MA) within the Ministry for Resources and Rural Affairs (MRRA) is responsible for all network Activities. The network’s Support Unit is located within the Managing Authority and it is responsible for the smooth running of the NRN.

The overall purpose of the Maltese NRN is to bring together actors involved or interested in actions and operations financed by the Maltese National Rural Development Programme (RDP).

The main functions of the NRN are: developing and enhancing channels of communication through information Activities, facilitating the exchange of experiences and methodology, aiming to stimulate dialogue and improve the overall performance and success of the RDP on a local, regional, nationwide and international basis.

Network Participants

All rural stakeholders involved in the programming and implementation of the RDP, including designated partners and members of the monitoring committee, are part of the NRN. In this way the network comprises a broad representation of organisations and administrations involved in all four axes of the programme.

The Maltese NRN is particularly instrumental in the setting up and developing of the Leader approach in Malta, as well as ensuring the wider participation of all rural actors and stakeholders on horizontal thematic areas.

The annual work programme of the Maltese NRN specifies three thematic priorities for 2010 which are: competitiveness, multi-functionality and adding value to agricultural products; water Management; and rural tourism.
